Migration - Detention Bill Abolition

Russell recently supported legislation in the Parliament to abolish the debt owed by refugees who had been in detention after entering the country illegally.

The legislation did not have the support of the Coalition, but Mr. Broadbent told Parliament the idea of making illegal arrivals pay for the cost of their detention was wrong.

He said it was wrong when it was introduced under a former Labor Government, wrong under a Coalition Government and wrong now.

Mr. Broadbent said he was on solid ground in supporting the legislation as it was the result of a unanimous vote by a bipartisan Parliamentary Committee.
