About McMillan

The Federal electorate of McMillan covers more than 8,300-square kilometres in Victoria’s West and South Gippsland regions.

It runs from the Eastern fringe of the sprawling Melbourne Metropolitan area to the start of the Latrobe Valley, home to Victoria’s vast brown coal deposits and its power generation industry.

From North to south, McMillan extends from the Great Dividing Range to the picturesque South Gippsland coast and Wilsons promontory.

It has a vibrant and prosperous rural sector centred on the dairying industry, beef cattle, fruit and potato growing, fishing and tourism. The major population centres are Pakenham, Warragul, Drouin Moe-Newborough, Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Wonthaggi, Foster and Inverloch.

The corridor along the Princes Highwy and the main Gippsland Railway line is the fastest growing area in rural Victoria with communities along that route experiencing rapid growth in recent years.

The McMillan electorate was established in 1948 and was named after explorer Angus McMillan who made several trips to Gippsland in the 19th century.  At the 2007 election there were 87,064 people enrolled to vote at the 2007 Federal Election.
